How to Buy a SIM Card at Nairobi Airport (JKIA)

Yes, you can buy a SIM card at Nairobi's JKIA airport. Buy it only at a branded Safaricom or Airtel shop in the arrivals hall, by the Terminal 1A and 1E exits.

What to bring

  • Your passport. You need it to register the SIM.
  • For M-PESA: your physical passport, a valid entry stamp or eTA, and an active Safaricom line.

Avoid SIM sellers outside

Ignore people offering SIM cards outside the shops. Unregistered SIMs get blocked. If someone pressures you, say "Hapana, asante" (No, thank you) and keep walking.

Switch on M-PESA at the same time

Ask the shop staff to activate M-PESA when they set up your SIM. Many markets, small shops and matatus take only cash or M-PESA. You can top up with cash at any M-PESA agent (green sign) with your passport. Never share your PIN.

Prefer to skip the queue?

An eSIM can be set up before you fly, so your phone works the moment you land. Set it up while you are still on Wi-Fi at home.

Rules and prices can change. Confirm with official staff or the official website before you rely on them.
